Carn to Cove’s spring season is bursting with new shows and premieres. There are a massive 73 events in 48 venues across Cornwall from Lamorna in the West, to Kingsand in the South and Poughill in the north. The new brochure is out now and has details of all the shows and venues – keep a look out for it. To give you a taster of what is in store this spring; we have dance from Norway, PantaRei Danseteater and South Asia – Sonia Sabri Company, family fun from Angel Heart Theatre’s new show Cirkus Spectakular, film and music from Wurlitza, who perform live music to classic silent movie Diary of a Lost Girl, and lots of music: A Musical Kaleidoscope, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra , Moscow Drug Club, Fumi Okiji’s Old Time Jazz Band, The Brim, Sue Richardson Quartet and Urban Folk Quartet. And not forgetting storytelling from Anna Maria Murphy and Walking with Wilkie, and a feast of theatre: old favourites like Bec Applebee, Black Fish, Cube, Owdyado, and Scary Little Girls, and some new faces – Single Shoe, Temple Theatre, Every Day Theatre, , Whitehouse Productions, Little Soldier, and The Foundry Group will all be performing in Carn to Cove’s varied venues over the next few months.
But to kick off the new season, there are three brand new shows to see – on Saturday 17th September, The team that brought you the award-winning ‘Great Expectations’ have got their teeth into Bram Stoker’s classic tale of the vampire. Writer Andrew McPherson, director Simon Harvey and “outrageously versatile” actor David Mynne bring you a one-man performance of Dracula at Grampound Community Hall, starting at 7:30pm (01726 883874). Be warned: this monstrous, disturbing and completely batty tale of dark deeds and the Un-Dead, will thrill and seduce you!
Then there are two new music acts to get you dancing in the halls – Heads South combines Afro-Cuban and other Latin influenced rhythms with tuneful melodies in an enthralling repertoire of original compositions and arrangements of classic tunes. The music encompasses memorable new original tunes such as El Cardenal and La Plaza and great new arrangements of loved standards such as Mack the Knife and Guantanamera.
For newcomers to this music, think Buena Vista Social Club in a smaller package, add the excitement of Jazz, and imbibe the warmth of a Latin evening…this is performing at Bosun’s Diner, Charlestown in St Austell on 22nd January @ 8pm (01726 879500).
And finally, you will see this image on the front cover of the Carn to Cove brochure, which will be popping up all over the place soon. The People’s String Foundation mix passionate theatrics with an Urban Gypsy sound. The band is led by Ben Sutcliffe (Musical Director for Rogue Theatre and Trebbigan Productions) whose virtuoso violin styles have led to play with the likes of Ralph McTell, The Levellers, The Stranglers, The Yardbirds, The 3 Daft Monkeys, and Gary Stringer from Reef. Mixing artisan flavours with world grooves and a band that expands into a 24 piece Orchestra, The People’s String Foundation are fast being recognized as the heavyweights of the South West. As well as touring the Festival and Theatre circuits as a dynamic trio they encompass a grass roots philosophy, working with the community to promote local music and arts. You’re always sure of a warm welcome and a great night in Helland Village Hall, so make sure you get tickets for this gig on 23rd January at 7:30pm (01208 72603). Space is limited so book early! But this is the first show of six performances in Carn to Cove villages this spring, so watch this space for details.
