The music leader will lead a dispersed group of young musicians, facilitate online and in person sessions, co-create a new piece of music, and organise a live concert to present the finished work. The project includes a 3 day trip to Sibiu (ideally in early July 2022) to visit the Music Hub, and meet the Romanian music leaders, musicians and young participants
TK Music Lab will bring young musicians from each side to share in the creation and implementation of a piece of music, a film and a written zine which will act as a documentation of the project and a toolkit for future projects. By bringing together musical artists and young people from both countries, we will allow them to express themselves, learn from one another, and share their stories.
The role will involve 10 days’ work at £200 per day, plus travel and accommodation in Sibiu. There will be a one off payment to cover the rights of the commissioned piece to the use of the work in the project. The project will run from May 2022 to March 2023.
The project is funded by the British Council’s International Collaboration Grant, and we have the benefit of support from the International Collaboration team, as well as a relationship manager (based in Romania) for the duration. They are a point of contact for sector expertise and connection, artistic queries, and local connections.
TK Music Lab will cement a partnership and a relationship between two groups of people: the UK team and the Romanian team. They will share teaching, learning, knowledge exchange and will create a hub for musicians and performing artists. Carn to Cove will teach the Music Hub how to organise events for rural areas, involving young people actively in the process.
Artists and musicians from Romania and the UK will accompany a group of young people (aged 16-30), offering them the opportunity to express themselves, to learn from one another, to share their stories.
We aim to link generations to cooperate, work together, and inspire. Both groups of young people will include vulnerable young people, professional musicians, and talented artists; together they will:
We will also share the experience of a rural performance and a hub performance by the use of live stream and recording in 360 degree camera and ambisonic sound capture. This is an immersive experience where by positioning a camera and surround sound in a live space remote audiences can explore the space by accessing the 360 camera in real time. Carn to Cove has trialled this experience which captures the feel of a village hall… not only from what is going on the stage but also looking around the audience present during the interval and the performance. We will recruit a film maker to deliver this element, who will also take part in the Sibiu visit in July.
During the project we will collaborate to produce a printed guide, in the form of a zine, which will act as a documentation of the project, and an advocacy tool and a toolkit for future projects. The Romania team will lead this part of the project, but all young people will contribute to the design and production of the zine and it will have an informal presentation, distinctive to the project.
Creative Kernow is a charity based in Cornwall that works in the creative sector with community partners to advance the arts in communities which have low provision of services and where rural poverty is prevalent. Carn to Cove is the rural touring performing arts scheme that is part of Creative Kernow’s delivery programme, promoting (through a network of 400 community volunteers in tiny villages and small towns) professional performing arts events in two seasons per year.
Music Hub, based in Sibiu, Romania, was created after the team won a competition of creative ideas. The team found the perfect place in the city, bought the musical equipment with the competition prize, got a lot of donated instruments from the artistic community in Sibiu, and started to organise over 50 events since 2018. Besides hosting events, Music Hub is also a rehearsal place where bands, artists and ordinary people come to rehearse, compose, try, sing, play and have fun. We think each city would be much more valuable having a Music Hub.
May 2022 Selection of the UK participants to the exchange in Romania.

We would like to film in 360 degree and record ambisonic sound so will be looking for a film maker to join this trip.
January 2023 Organise two online events exchanging cultures with the British and Romanian public, using the 360 camera and live transmission of an UK event. This will take place on 6th January 2023 (TBC). A Romanian event, the Artists New Years, will take place on 31st January.
March 2023 The meeting in Cornwall, in March/April 2023 – the date depends on the Easter vacation in Romania and the UK. The Romanian team will come to the UK team to learn how to transport the shows and performances to the rural area and how to make this appealing to the public.
Also, in this visit, the Romanian team will be able to help the UK team with any advice or practical jobs in creating and implementing the Music Hub in Cornwall.
